I tried to capture what kids in the street get up to (or what their mums believe they are up to) when they head off down the bush at the back of their houses after school. Our bushy landscape in the Blue Mountains allows for many opportunities for play. ‘As long as you’re back in time for tea’, their Mums would answer.

PACKERS PRIZE CHOSEN BY TAFE STAFF "Isolating From My Phobias" by Sarah Southall

This work was completed after reflecting on my isolation due to my PTSD and severe depression. The mask symbolises how I’ve presented myself at work, home and society in general. I’ve worn a mask for so long I’ve forgotten who I really am. The child symbolises my withdrawal and regression in my ability to socialise as an adult. The cemetery symbolises my obsession with death during my times of severe melancholy. The butterfly symbolises a glimmer of hope through my expression with art.

"Message in a Bottle" by Adelaide Worcester

Would you buy bottled rainforest air from a supermarket shelf? It’s only slightly more ridiculous and environmentally devastating than bottled water. But look it up – it’s already a thing. This blew my mind. I blurred imagination and reality – photographing a discarded bottle and reprinting it on fabric, replacing elements of found items with textile work. The stowaway butterfly broadcasts a desperate message: ‘SEND HELP’. Is this for humans, or have we already failed in our stewardship, and the plea goes beyond? We are just starting to open our eyes to how our daily choices impact on the environment. Choose wisely.

Grief is feeling hopeless and helpless, like being surrounded, and overwhelmed by an unnatural force. With incredible strength, patience and perseverance, the sun will shine through.

I am inspired by the beach and like using dot painting to connect to my Aboriginal Nanna. Her Mum was part of the stolen generation. I really enjoyed painting this in my art therapy sessions.

“Soul sisters” is All about the Woman we love. It’s our own identity, it’s the identity we give to others and the identities that we see in our lives through other woman. The heart and sun of this piece is about owning our emotional beings and appreciating the woman who form us into who we are. We may not always be the perfect and true selves but the sun will pull our energy back into place. This reminds me that I am strong. Strong because Country holds me steady, because I have the stars looking at me and because the sun hugs me with its warmth. Most of all, I am mighty from the hundreds of years of survival and that is something to be proud of. A small reminder to be tall, take up space and own your existence. Firstly for yourself, secondly for your Sisters and Aunties and thirdly, the woman that came before.
